A contemporary of Minimalists such as Dan Flavin, Walter De Maria, and Donald Judd, Kuwayama soon developed his own distinctive style, typified by vivid fields of paint juxtaposed in horizontal and vertical compositions, as well as monochromatic canvases bisected by thin strips Tadaaki Kuwayama (b. 1932, Nagoya) broke from his traditional Nihonga mineral pigment training soon after he moved from Japan to New York in 1958, following his graduation from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Following his first solo show in 1961 at Green Gallery, he started to make monochromatic and geometric works that marked his role in American Minimalism.
